New investment and leadership
Stability AI reached a $1 billion valuation and appointed Prem Akkaraju as its new CEO. Akkaraju, the former CEO of Weta Digital, leads the company alongside Executive Chairman Sean Parker. A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on October 5 confirmed that a recent funding round included at least $76.3 million, though sources suggest the total may reach $100 million. Lightspeed Venture Partners valued the company at $1 billion, while other investors include Coatue, Greycroft, Sound Ventures, and O’Shaughnessy Ventures. The company also negotiated $100 million in debt forgiveness and a release from $300 million in future obligations to stay afloat. This investment follows a period where the company raised $76 million in Series B funding in 2026 with support from Universal Music Group and Electronic Arts. Founded in 2019 by Emad Mostaque and Cyrus Hodes, Stability AI rose to prominence in August 2022 with the release of Stable Diffusion. The company faces ongoing litigation from artists such as Sarah Andersen and Karla Ortiz regarding copyright infringement. It also faces lawsuits from Getty Images alleging the unauthorized use of 12 million photos for training. The company pursues a business model similar to IBM’s Red Hat, which provides free versions for general consumption and premium products for larger customers.
The engine for professional production
Stable Diffusion provides the engine for professional creative workflows. I find the flexibility of Stable Diffusion, which allows for custom-trained models and on-premise deployment, superior to the closed Midjourney system. Midjourney requires a paid subscription of $10, $30, or $60 per month and provides no API for most users. Stability AI provides a Platform API and works with enterprise customers like Electronic Arts, HubSpot, and Warner Music Group. You should notice the difference between a tool that requires a Discord bot and one that integrates into a studio’s private GPU cluster. The models include SD3.5 with 3.5 billion parameters and XL Turbo, which uses Adversarial Diffusion Distillation to enable real-time generation in one step. Stable Diffusion training used a cluster of 4,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs running in AWS. The company targets four areas: managed pipelines for developers, custom enterprise models, content creation tools, and B2C applications. However, the setup involves friction because powerful tools like ComfyUI require users to learn nodes, samplers, schedulers, and CFG values.
| Feature | Midjourney | Stable Diffusion |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly Price | $10 to $60 | $0 (self-hosted) |
| API Access | No | Yes |
| Deployment | Web/Discord | Web/Local/Cloud |

Hollywood ties and licensing
The company builds ties with Hollywood through board appointments and industry events. James Cameron joined the Board of Directors in September 2024. Digital Hollywood also hosts summits focused on cinematic AI and the future of creativity. Stability AI uses a tiered licensing structure based on annual revenue. Organizations with less than $1 million in annual revenue can use the Core Models for free under the Community License. Companies that exceed this $1 million threshold must obtain an Enterprise License to use the models commercially. Midjourney allows commercial use on paid plans, but users cannot run it on their own hardware. Stability AI models like SDXL and SD3.5 provide high-resolution outputs for professional tasks. Electronic Arts, HubSpot, Mercado Libre, UMG, and Warner Music Group are named enterprise customers of Stability AI. Will the company maintain its open-source roots while chasing these massive enterprise contracts?
