In March 2026, Harvey reached an $11 billion valuation. This is a $3 billion increase from the $8 billion valuation seen previously. The company serves 100,000 lawyers across 1,300 organizations and its annual recurring revenue was approximately $190 million by the end of 2025. While Harvey uses custom pricing for enterprise clients, other vendors have set add-on rates. Thomson Reuters CoCounsel is a base platform subscription of $200 to $600 per user per month plus an AI add-on of $149 to $299. LexisNexis+ AI is an add-on to LexisNexis for $179 to $399 per user per month. These tools are used for contract analysis and due diligence. AI and innovation spending is the largest expense category for Am Law 100 firms. Nearly 70% of these firms increased this spending by more than 5% through the second quarter of 2026.
Rapid growth and rising AI expenses
Law firm revenue is up 11.7% in the first half of 2026. Am Law 50 firms saw a 13.1% increase in revenue. Billable hours are up more than 4% during the same period. These increases occur while the industry manages heavy expense burdens. Although the legal industry faces significant pressure to lower fees, most large firms continue to use hourly billing models that allow them to retain the massive productivity gains generated by their significant investments in artificial intelligence. Profits per equity partner were up 14% in 2025. This is because clients absorb the costs of new technology through higher rates rather than receiving fee reductions. The M&A market is a driver of this growth. There were 47 deals valued over $10 billion. The total deal value is $2.8 trillion, which is a 48% jump over last year. This is the highest level since 1980. Large industrial and infrastructure companies, also called HALOs, drive these deals. Lawyers profit from these deals regardless of the impact AI has on efficiency. Midsize and regional firms struggle to compete with the scale of larger rivals. These smaller players often seek mergers to gain the heft required to manage rising attorney compensation and AI implementation costs.
Efficiency gains and the billable hour
Productivity gains are evident in specific workflows. In one high-volume litigation matter, a system reduced associate time on a complaint response from 16 hours to 3-4 minutes. A mid-size firm in Charlotte lost a contract to an Atlanta competitor because the latter used Harvey AI and Claude to finish a 200-page contract review in six hours. The Charlotte firm needed three days for the same task. The most effective legal AI strategy is to deploy tools that automate high-volume tasks while maintaining human accountability. This strategy is necessary because 74% of hourly billable tasks are automatable with AI. This automation puts $27,000 of annual revenue per lawyer at risk. You probably already feel this pressure.
| Tool Category | Annual Cost per Attorney |
|---|---|
| Thomson Reuters CoCounsel | $4,200 – $12,600 |
| LexisNexis+ AI | $179 – $399 (add-on) |
| Practice Management AI | $588 – $1,548 |
The industry is seeing a shift in how firms manage these tools. Some firms use general assistants for drafting, while others use specialized platforms for research. Does the industry face a permanent divide between firms that use AI and those that rely on manual labor?
