The 2022 Founding and the Pi Chatbot
Inflection AI is a technology company that launched in March 2022 in Palo Alto, California. Founders Mustafa Suleyman, Reid Hoffman, and Karen Simonyan built the company to create personal artificial intelligence. The company reached a $4 billion valuation in June 2023 after raising $1.3 billion. Investors in this round included Microsoft, Nvidia, Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt, Reid Hoffman, Mike Schroepfer, Demis Hassabis, Will.i.am, Horizons Ventures, and Dragoneer. In May 2022, the company released Pi, a chatbot designed for personal intelligence. You likely remember the hype surrounding the initial launch of the Pi chatbot. This chatbot is a teacher, coach, and confidante. It focuses on emotional intelligence to maintain human-like conversations. The system uses the proprietary Inflection-1 model. Inflection-1 showed performance on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding benchmark that surpassed Meta’s LLaMA and OpenAI’s GPT 3.5. It also surpassed Google’s PaLM 540B in answering trivia questions. The infrastructure for training this model included 3,500 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, 40,000 cables, and 500 miles of InfiniBand fiber cables. Pi’s training data includes information up to November 2022. The chatbot is available via WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and iMessage. It remembers past communications and resists flirting with users. The company is a public benefit corporation. The mission of the founders is to build a tool designed to understand the user rather than the other way around. This tool is a participant in dialogue to help users navigate work problems or connect with humans.

The Microsoft Talent Acquisition
The company’s trajectory shifted in March 2024. Microsoft hired Mustafa Suleyman and Karen Simonyan to lead a new consumer AI group called Microsoft AI. Suleyman became the Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI, while Simonyan took the role of Chief Scientist. Microsoft also hired many of the other 70 employees from Inflection. Microsoft reached a $650 million agreement with Inflection AI to gain licensing rights to its models and bring over much of the workforce, which functioned as a strategic acqui-hire of the startup’s top talent. The Microsoft deal gutted the original startup’s workforce. Headcount Analytics reported that the team shrank by nearly two-thirds following the arrangement. The $650 million payment was used to reimburse Inflection AI’s investors. Within the new structure, Mikhail Parakhin and Misha Bilenko moved their teams to report to Suleyman. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority investigated the deal to see if it created a merger situation, but it eventually cleared the move because Inflection had a small share of the UK consumer market. Suleyman previously co-founded DeepMind and joined Greylock Partners in early 2022. Simonyan previously led development on breakthroughs like AlphaZero. Satya Nadella announced the hiring to advance Copilot and other consumer research.
The Pivot to Enterprise AI
Inflection AI is now a smaller enterprise AI company. Sean White is the current CEO. White formerly led R&D at Mozilla. The company focuses on Inflection for Enterprise and the Inflection 3.0 models. Pi remains available, but the company now imposes rate limits on free usage to manage GPU consumption. This change helps the company lower usage without affecting all users. The company is also working with the Data Transfer Initiative to allow users to export conversation history. This feature allows data to be used with other large language models or with upcoming enterprise products. The company’s mission moved from personal intelligence toward business workflows and productivity. The company is currently testing "relational AI" through Pi Journeys. This experiment helps users with tasks like life navigation, parenting, and caregiving support. The company operates with a staff of roughly 60. The development path follows a progression from IQ to EQ, then to agentic ability, and finally to social intelligence. Will the pivot to enterprise models eventually starve the consumer Pi interface of necessary development?
