Competition and Realism Trends
The high level of realism in text-to-image generators like Midjourney and DALL-E in 2023 sparked a massive wave of viral photos, such as a widely shared image that showed Pope Francis in a white puffer coat. This realism trend also led to a fictional arrest of Donald Trump and a hoax of an attack on the Pentagon. The British magazine The Economist used Midjourney for a June 2022 cover. In 2022, Jason Allen used Midjourney to win first place in the Colorado State Fair digital art competition. He used the name Jason M. Allen. The judges did not know Midjourney generated the image.
The tool faces criticism for bias. Research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate found the tool easy to use for generating "explicit content" and racist or conspiratorial images. A study from Rest of World reported that Midjourney generates images based on national stereotypes. Even neutral prompts returned unequal results regarding gender and skin color. In 2024, a Frontiers journal published a paper that contained gibberish figures generated with Midjourney. One figure showed a rat with large testicles and a large penis towering over itself. The journal retracted the paper one day after the images went viral on Twitter. You should understand that these models compete for dominance in the creative arts. How will the next version update change the competition?
Content Moderation and Policy Shifts
Midjourney transitioned to an AI-powered content moderation system in May 2023. Before this, the banned word system prohibited language associated with sexual themes or extreme violence. It also blocked names of religious or political figures. Users could not use names like Allah or Xi Jinping. The AI-powered system now interprets the entire prompt. This allows context-dependent use of words. The system still prevents the generation of contentious images. It stops depictions of global leaders in situations of arrest.
